Gold (Latin aurum) is known from ancient times, and coins have been made of it throughout history. Today, gold isn't used for circulating legal tender, although many countries including the US do produce bullion coins.

Many people consider the coin above, designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, to be the most beautiful American coin. A modified version of the standing Liberty design is used on American gold bullion coins.
